Top Mistakes Business Owners Make When Managing Their Social Media

Do you know maintaining a social media presence is important but you find the whole topic overwhelming? We have compiled a list of the top mistakes business owners make when managing their social media and how they can refocus their efforts.

Quantity Over Quality

If you take a look at big brand’s social media, you’ll see they are often posting multiple times a day. Graphics, polls, pictures, videos, and testimonials, they have it all going on! It is important to realize that even though this strategy works for big brands, that doesn’t mean it is the best strategy for your business. Big brands have YEARS of content they are working with and world-wide brand recognition.

If you are just starting out, planning your content can be tough and it takes practice! Trying to plan 3 posts a day is just asking for burn out, that’s why it is so important to focus on QUALITY over QUANTITY.  It is more important to introduce yourself and provide your audience with valuable content than it is to push a bunch of generic posts.

Too Many Social Media Platforms

Another mistake we see businesses making is opening too many social media platforms. Once you open a page, it doesn’t look good for your business to let that page be inactive. You need to be posting consistently and engaging your audience.

If you are managing your own social media, think about how much time you can commit, realistically, and decide which platforms are the most important in reaching your audience.

Question: I own a hair salon and I want to get more people coming in. Do I need to have a presence on Linkedin, Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, TikTok, and YouTube?

Answer: NO! You need to think about where your clients are coming from and focus your time and attention on those channels, you can always add more platforms to your online presence in the future.

It’s better to have one GREAT social media platform than to be on all of them and make yourself look bad/ inactive through them.

Not Replying to Questions and Comments #BeSocialOnSocialMedia

At Make Your Mark, this is a big one and we will say it over and over again: if you want to use social media as a marketing tool, YOU HAVE TO BE SOCIAL ON SOCIAL MEDIA!

Literally, every time someone comments, answer them! They are trying to engage with your brand and it is a huge opportunity to get them into your sales funnel. If you find you are answering the same questions multiple times, save your response as a template and have it on hand for quick reference! These small and more tedious tasks will pay off in the long run as you build a stronger relationship with your audience base.

Poor Planning

Let’s be real for a second, planning content can be tedious and time-consuming, but if you take into account the time it takes each day to write out a spontaneous post, it is a HUGE TIME SAVER!

Take a morning or afternoon at the end of the month and block off 4 hours. Set yourself up with your favorite drink, some good snacks, and plan out your month. Spread out your posts, focus on providing valuable content, and you can even pre-schedule posts with online apps like Buffer
